Three Powerful Ways to Impact Your Mood Positively

img_6289

I was always a very happy person. It wasn’t until I was working to pay the bills, working for college credit at an internship and going to school full-time that I began to struggle with keeping the light in my life bright. Sometimes, life is just so hectic and certain things are just out of your control. I learned to use my environment to influence my perception of my world and to manipulate my brain into the mindset where I wanted to reside.

Plants:

You’d be surprised how much adding plants to your space will brighten your homes aesthetic. I like bright greens and purples in my space but flowering plants really add an untouchable welcome and elegant comfort to your space. Easy and low maintenance plants include succulents and even some plants that you can eat!? This year I grew cherry tomatoes in my living room window all summer and part of fall with very little maintenance! I simply watered it and used an organic plant food a few times. Plants really brighten your perspective because humans are naturally comforted by nature and their beauty is unprecedented. If you aren’t into plants, try ecotherapy. Ecotherapy is an umbrella term for spending time in nature as a natural anti-anxiety remedy and anti-depressant. It has also been linked to lowering blood pressure as well as relieving stress.

Our cat Moo Moo loved the plants we picked up this past season!! 🌴

Essential Oils & Diffusers:

Studies have proven that essential oils have an impact on your brain chemistry. Aromatherapy is such a rewarding form of self-care! Speaking from personal experience and some of the reading I have done, each kind of essential oil impacts your brain differently. My favorite blend consists of grapefruit and lavender. It makes every breath you take pleasant and noteworthy. There are so many affordable essential oils out there but the important part is that you buy therapeutic grade essential oils, extra points if you can afford organic. I use this in my office at work and people are constantly raving about how it influences their mood and makes them feel a little happier!

Declutter & Donate:

Ladies and gentlemen, one of my favorite rules is the one touch rule! I might be alone when I say this but having a messy, cluttered home gives me anxiety! Take the time to declutter, donating to worthy charitable organizations! It takes less time to donate and claim items on your taxes than it takes to list and sell your items online! Like I said maybe this isn’t an issue for you but I’ve noticed that I’m most able to concentrate and be productive when my home is in order! 🙂 The one touch rule helps you decipher how much stuff you have and if your area is possibly too cluttered. Unfortunately this rule doesn’t work for areas like books on your bookcase per say. Maybe you’re happy with your home but even just taking the time to clean your space, organize and find a place for everything will eliminate stress and anxiety from your day.

Grocery Shopping Cheat Sheet for the Clean Living Beginner

Hello Everyone!

The other day, I was talking to my sister about integrating nontoxic products into the household. My sister shared a belief that it was too expensive to switch to products that were cancer free, nontoxic and absent of hormone disruptors. I have spoken to many people who claim that clean living is too expensive. My fiancé and I are a young couple, just starting out and we don’t have a lot of money. However, we manage to very easily avoid toxic products. We’ve discovered buying nontoxic products usually only adds a few extra dollars to the grocery bill because nontoxic living means buying less not more. This week I decided to put together a little cheat sheet of the nontoxic products I use, most of which I buy at the local Giant (I live in Eastern Pennsylvania). Giant has a great selection of nontoxic products but for everything else I need, Amazon Prime is the way to go.

These are the products that I personally use. I have checked the ingredients in each product using the Think Dirty App on my iPhone & the EWG website.

Keep in mind that a lot of the products listed below would only be purchased once or very, very rarely.

I would love to use prices for every product but if I use a link to Amazon, as an Amazon Affiliate, I am not allowed to post prices because of the products fluctuating financial status.

Laundry Detergent

All Free & Clear Laundry Detergent: If you want easy access, order from the link below. However, I’ve seen All Free &  Clear laundry detergent (31 loads) at my local grocery store for anywhere from 3-5 dollars.

Deodorant

I have been using organic lemon slices for deodorant. However, my skin is very sensitive and I’ve decided to use this Crystal Body Deodorant instead because it is sustainable and much more affordable! I have never seen this natural version in any store. From my research, you want to purchase a crystal that is translucent and this product is known to last 10+ years. Apparently, the salt kills bacteria and takes away any odor instantly! It doesn’t clog your pores and is perfect for sensitive skin!

Dish Soap

Body Wash

Ever since I started using ACURE Body Wash, Ultra-Hydrating, 8 Ounce, I never have issues with dry, itchy or tight skin after using soap. My skin actually feels much smoother, plus it has a pleasant, light scent!

Lotion/Makeup Remover/Hair Mask/Facial Moisturizer

I use organic unrefined coconut oil in or out of the shower if my skin feels dry. There are tons of lotions available with nontoxic ingredients but coconut oil is so affordable and it doubles as an antibacterial home remedy ingredient. I also use it as a makeup remover, a skin moisturizer (best applied twice a week using sugar and coconut oil to exfoliate or in the shower) and a hair mask. There are so many uses to organic unrefined coconut oil!

You can find organic unrefined coconut oil in most grocery stores for around $10.

What’s in Your Shampoo? A Cleaner Shampoo Review

Hello Everyone!

I know I haven’t mentioned the upcoming giveaway in awhile but I just want to remind everyone that I will be announcing the rules for entering the giveaway on August 11th and it’ll run until the end of August! The prize will also be announced on the 11th!

However, today we’re talking shampoo!

Which shampoo do you use? I’m urging you to review the ingredients in your toiletries. Even shampoos that appear natural and organic (like the brand Organix) have harmful ingredients that could be effecting your health. Many companies use misleading labels to attract customers to their so-called “natural” products. Once again I recommend using the Think Dirty App to scan your shampoo or the EWG Cosmetics Database to look up ingredients. At the time I scanned my shampoo, I was using the brand Aussie in an effort to save a few bucks.

The Think Dirty App uses a dirty scale from 0-10 that gives the product a score based on the ingredients. The toxins could be hormone distruptors, cancer causing or even contribute to reproductive issues.

Aussie Received —- (9) ALMOST THE DIRTIEST.

In the past I have used Wella, Dove, Redken, Aussie & many other commercial shampoos. The result of using these brands was silky, smooth hair and a dry, itchy scalp. I suffered from a terribly intrusive itch for seriously so long (years)! I recently switched to Acure Organics Lemongrass and Argan Stem Cell Volume Natural Shampoo and Conditioner.

Acure Organics Lemongrass and Argan Stem Cell Volume Natural Shampoo and Conditioner 8 Oz Review

I love, love this shampoo. My skin finally healed and the itching on my scalp completely stopped! My hair was also EXTREMELY clean and shiny! It felt thick, volumous and easy to style. I thought it had a really pleasant, natural aroma as well. You can really see a huge difference in this shampoo when comparing it’s ingredients to products like Aussie. –⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓–

Check out Acure’s Ingredients

Shampoo: Acai Berry, Blackberry, Rosehips, Pomegranate, Rooibos, Aloe Vera, Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate, Betaine, Vegetable Glycerin, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Cocoglucosides Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Sodium Levulinate, Guar gum conditioner, Potassium Sorbate, Argan Oil, Olive Oil, D-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate (vitamin E), CoQ10, Argan Stem Cells, Avocado oil, Lemongrass, French Lavender, Oakmoss and Rosemary Oils.

& Aussie’s Ingredients

Water, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycol Distearate, Sodium Citrate, Cocamide Mea, Sodium Xylenesulfonate, Fragrance, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Ecklonia Radiata Extract, Dimethicone, Citric Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Chloride, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Tetrasodium Edta, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Yellow 5, Red 33

Yellow 5 is totally controversial and studies have already deemed it cancerous. Fragrance could literally be anything since companies aren’t required to disclose ingredients listed under fragrance. Another ingredient with TONS of harmful consequences is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.

Check out Smart Klean’s Blog for the Top Ten Reasons to Avoid Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
This shampoo and conditioner is a much better, affordable alternative to the shampoos I have purchased at the drug store. I looked up all of the ingredients on the EWG Cosmetics Database because the Think Dirty App didn’t have this product in its database. All of the ingredients were super safe except for Potassium Sorbate, which was given a score of fair (moderate hazard). I find that the benefits of this shampoo outweigh that one ingredients mediocrity. Personally, my scalp has healed and I am no longer suffering from itchy skin! I’m definitely not saying this is the only clean product because there are so many options at all different price ranges! Sometimes it is just overwhelming to decide which shampoo is right for you and I really love this shampoo and conditioner! I tried Acure Organics Moroccan Argan Oil and Argan Stem Cell Natural Shampoo and Conditioner but I did have the same positive experience.

Check your Mascara for these Toxic Ingredients

I have recently been on a road to clean living! On my journey, I have used the Think Dirty App to scan my cosmetics for harmful toxins that could contribute to cancer or interfere with my hormones. I’ve been using CoverGirl LashBlast Fusion for years. It was recommended to me by a fellow blogger, and I immediately loved its ability to go on smoothly and wash off easily. However, when I scanned my mascara, my perspective changed. It was packed with terrible ingredients that have the capability to do some serious harm overtime and in conjunction with my other products!

There are Harmful Ingredients in CoverGirl Mascara!

Ethylparaben: Causes immunotoxicty/Endocrine Disruptor (Click Here for Sources)

Click here for a more detailed description on hormone disruptors

Polyethylene: Carcinogenic/Non-biodegradable = Microplastic waste pollution  floating on the surface waters of the Laurentian Great Lakes. (Journal Here)

Methylparaben & Propylparaben: Some studies have found that breast tumors show a build up of methylparabens & Propylparaben in the breast tissue. (Research Here)

Phenoxyethanol: The Environmental Working Group Nonprofit scores phenoxyethanol as a moderate hazard due to its proven toxicity to humans in high doses. There are restrictions on the amount that can be in cosmetic products but they do not account for your exposure using other cosmetic and cleaning products. (Resource)

Why is Endlessly Beautiful Mascara a Better Option?

I simply want to share my experience using their product. Instead of constantly applying (I wear mascara everyday) mascara that could cause damage to my body, I bought a new organic mascara that has the ability to heal and protect my lashes! Endlessly Beautiful mascara was my first choice because it is made with ingredients like Chamomile, Coffee Powder, & Vitamin E. My eye lashes used to bother me and they would often fall out. Since I’ve been using this mascara for a couple of weeks, I can definitely say that my eyelashes feel much more nourished and healthy!

Another plus? It smells great! The scent reminds me of cupcakes!

images
Endlessly Beautiful Mascara

After purchase, I received an email that included a PDF which outlined several beauty tricks that I found super useful! It also included the many ingredients and the benefits of each one! I had also been concerned about the size of the tube. When I received the mascara, I was a little bit surprised by how small the tube was. The email I received after purchase assured the buyer that it was not less product than commercial mascara but rather less packaging! Yet another aspect I liked about the this company was their environmental consciousness. More perks? I was able to wear Endlessly Beautiful all day without flaking, itching or smearing! This is the first mascara I’ve ever used that does not flake!
